To the Citizens of the Thrall Community:
We would like to take a few minutes of your time to ask for your
support.
The Thrall Fire Dept. and Thrall First Responders is made up of a
group of men and women who are dedicated, unpaid volunteers that respond
to fire calls, wrecks, and medical calls. We respond to emergencies
in fire trucks as well as our personal vehicles to extinguish dangerous
fires and provide medical care/assistance to patients prior to the
EMS ambulance arriving. When needed, we assist the EMS ambulance in
the transporting of the patient to the hospital. The Thrall Fire Dept.
not only covers the Thrall fire district of 75 sq. miles, but also
provides assistance to the surrounding fire departments in Williamson
County and West Milam County area.
There are approx. 26 members in the Thrall Fire Dept. and 4 personnel
in the first responder organization. When you call 911 and request
the fire department or EMS, Taylor Fire Dispatch pages out the Thrall
firemen to your location. The members of the fire dept. are not paid
by the EMS, Williamson County, or through the ambulance fee. We survive
on your donations, by fund-raising events, minimal annually county
funding, which the County Commissioners are considering no longer
giving to the fire departments, and a lot of times by money out of
our own pockets. Through the years many of you have seen us at work,
at your or your families’ home, at accidents, or other fire
emergencies. In the East part of Williamson County the closest paid
fire dept is approx. 15 to 30 minutes away, depending on what part
of the Thrall area you live in. Depending on the circumstances, it
can take only a few minutes for a hay field or small house to become
fully engulfed with fire.
In order for your Thrall Fire Dept. to provide a quick response it
is important that we are able to update our equipment, maintain the
fire trucks, and continue our education. The cost of buying equipment
and maintaining it is very expensive. Currently we have 2 fire trucks
that the fire dept. is paying for. The first truck we have been paying
on for 10 years with a total price of $150,000. The second truck,
a new brush unit, was recently purchased due to our other 2 brush
trucks being outdated and unreliable. This brush truck is not only
used for grass fires but can also be used as a mini pumper at structure
fires, which allows the firemen to get water on the fire faster. Even
with a grant from the Forestry Service, the fire dept. still has to
pay $22,000 from the total cost of $75,000 for the brush truck. In
order to house and protect the fire trucks it was necessary to add
an extension to the fire station, which totaled $30,000. There is,
also, an annual cost of thousands of dollars the fire dept. must spend
on maintenance for the extrication tools, which are used to cut entrapped
patients out of mangled vehicles involved in motor vehicle collisions.
The Thrall Fire Dept. pays for all utilities used at the fire station,
and fuel needed to run the trucks and equipment. As the cost of maintaining
our fire dept. has increased, the funding we receive has remained
the same.
If you are interested in donating towards the purchase of the fire
trucks and maintenance of our equipment, please drop off your tax-deductible
donations at the Thrall City Hall during normal business hours, or
